A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from
Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian
Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India . He was very active
in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to
see him run on Bandra's Carter Road . Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he
returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive
heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young
kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India . However, it was
even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid
marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of
us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as
to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack
at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?

A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had
mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in
most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer
the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason

However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan
used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of
Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out': Boss' Day Out: Ranjan Das
of SAP India
.

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep ( and that
he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to
what others extolled ).

The Evidence

Last week, I was working with a well-known cardiologist on the subject
of 'Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep'. While I cannot share the
video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have
distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our
lives.

Some Excerpts:

* Short sleep duration ( <5 or 5-6 hours ) increased risk for high BP by
350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night.
Paper published in 2009. As you know, high BP kills.

* Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP
if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.

* Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased
risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.

* Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations
of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor
of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels
stayed high!!

* Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body
such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha)
and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical
conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper
published in 2004.

* Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart
disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart
disease. Paper published in 2006.

Ideal Sleep

For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture.
But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement
) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter
helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate
between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your
pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The
latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.

For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is
more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6
hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of
REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in
a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired
throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down (
I've been there, done that ).

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to
repair the running related damage.

If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth
Sleepiness Test below.

Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above
abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24,
the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don't like to
drive ( maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line ).

In conclusion:

Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper
food, exercising ( marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he
missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my
opinion, that killed him.
If you are not getting enough sleep ( 7 hours ), you are playing with
fire, even if you have low stress.

I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever
the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the
scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do
not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse
to get some more sleep.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep.
Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please
forward this mail/article to as many of your colleagues/friends as
possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If
we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the
happiest person on earth.

"From the Indonesian book best seller of all time Laskar Pelangi, made by Andrea Hirata" I haven’t read the book, and I don’t want to spend like so many of lines explaining about the story and the plot and the craft and what’s so good about it like in any other movie reviews. All you need to do is type Laskar Pelangi in Google and you’ll find lots of stuff regarding to the movies itself. Like here, or t here or this. :D

It’s a simple story, about the struggle of having a dream no matter how poor you are. But again, it’s how you tell the story that matters. This film is very simple, and touchable. Not like any other Indonesian movies. Deserve FFI nominees. I like how the movie tells us not to give up our dreams and stand for what we believe in but I like to know how the rest of those Laskar Pelangi personal story. by reading the book? Yeah. Later >_> lol.

Overall the film is GREAT! I give this movie a rate of 10/10. I'm recommending this movie to all. Definitely a must see movie and hopefully this is not the last "must see" Indonesian movie. You might want to end up doing something good to others, and it’s probably what the world need most now.

Crack Your Brain!

First of all, I would like to apologize because lack of updates here. I've been busy lately as USUAL.(cough for real)

Anyway, which way do you see the dancer turn? If you see her turn clockwise, then you use more of your right side of your brain, and vice versa you use the left side of your brain (the text information in the beginning of the film is wrong…) However, most people will see the dancer turning anti-clockwise.

Normally you say that the right side of the brain is more creative orientated and the left side more logic. According to me, I mostly see her turn clockwise; but can sometimes get her to turn counter clockwise. Sometimes I can get her to do it on command and sometimes she won’t change direction at all. Occasionally, she vacillates back and forth until she finally goes one way or the other. Some people can see it both ways at will. If you take the brain tests, you will find which is most dominant. All the brain tests I have taken indicate that I am right in the middle which would explain the reason she turns both ways for me. I do not think it has anything to do with your IQ, but more with the way you learn, think and perceive things. There was a really good brain test going around a few years ago; but I did not found it again when I looked today. Do the test with your friends, it’s quite astonishing to see that different people see the dancer turn in different directions!

A few years ago, I stumbled upon this really awesome online multiplayer jamming game called O2Jam.
For once, I tried playing a non-violent online game.

It was really fun and challenging! The game tested my hand-eye coordination to an insane level.
You get to choose what songs to play, such as Canon (o2 version), Bride In Dream, V3.

But then the game shut down. The company went bankrupt I guess. So I searched around.. for an alternative of the game.
That was when I found O2mania. An offline version of O2jam! The game is in Chinese 0.o but don't worry, I found an English version lying around somewhere on the internet.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!....I turn 14 today and I've spent most of my birthday in front of the computer. I didn't have any important things to do today,I didn't have a party waiting for me but I had a great time with my friends playing DOTA and I just started playing Runescape, already level 7! (jakun -.-"). I got phone calls from family members and friends wishing me "Happy Birthday" in their own respective special ways, and between phone calls I looked out of my bedroom window at the prettiest blue sky with the fluffiest white clouds that I've seen in a long time. It's been that long since I actually took the time to pay attention to the sky. As time goes by, birthdays tend to be just another normal day in my life. Thanks to my friends for wishing me via IM. Massive Traffic Jam!

First of all, I would like to apologize because lack of updates here. I've been busy lately.(cough)

Anyway, a couple of days ago I went to the hot-spring, a large pool of natural hot water of 45 - 55 degrees besides a cool stream, with my family, and we all had a great time there. The hot-spring is located not far from Kelantan. It was relaxing and enjoyable. I really liked when it was cold and raining outside but I was warm/hot in the hot springs and all kinds of steam was rising up into the air, also being surrounded by nature. Some believe the water from this hot spring has a healing properties. This was awesome and really refreshing :-). Those with stiff muscles, stiff joints, rheumatism, spinal injuries, insomnia and skin related problems should consider soaking themselves here! And something unexpected happened that day, which is kinda suck..-.-"...
But hot-spring was better than a modern day spa centres, right?
On the way back home(my aunt's house), we ate the long chewy ones called keropok lekor in Kampong Backhok, Terengganu and it was delicious and totally different with KL's keropok lekor of course.

It was very tiring day, but very interesting and insightful.

So today's the day.I had a really good time with my friends who all flew out for the movie.
When I got back to my house I watched TV and just went to bed. I didn't have any trouble falling asleep. But today I'm satisfied. I feel like I've been waiting for this for a while. The movie was okay! (7/10) So we had great time.

As much as I want to continue blogging here, by the time I reached this blog I would have run out of ideas to blog about. So anyway, life has been a little hectic lately, finishing off the school year and such. Almost everyday I’d be rotting at home - waking up late, doing nothing but sitting in front of my computer whole day, watch nonsensical shows on television because there is simply NOTHING TO DO.

Sounds familiar to you guys? I bet it does.

I can’t wait for holidays to be over. I miss doing homework (Not exactly ), reaching home late after an exhausting day in school. Let’s count down to the the next semester, shall we? LOL.
Oh yeah.

ASK any youngster if they find school boring and you'd expect most to agree - but a staggering number are now claiming the summer holidays are just as dull!

Google Maps driving direction is back on track again on 31 Oct 2008. It not official, I guessed (since not mentioned in Google LatLong.) So, I give it a try from Merbau Sempak to SMK Bukit Rahman Putra.

The maps look to be in good detail and support routing, so you can use the “Get Directions” features. Try this link for directions between the Causeway and Kuala Lipis.

Sometimes I feel very fortunate. Not only for the small things in life that can so easily be taken for granted but also for the other great many benefits and comforts. However one aspect of my life for which I feel extremely fortunate about is to have a great family where I get privilege to go camping with them and my dad's friends, teamwork and hardworking ; ( except for my sis =p duhhh..XD... ) specifically when setting up the tents..and like my sis being sooo bossy..zzzz...

The best part is when all gather around the campfire and one of my dad's friend told a spooky ghost stories " The Roof Top Voice " in the middle of the night!...dudeeee...tak de bende lain nak cerita kee..-.-"...and slept around 1-2am...but I'm very grateful for all my dad's friends who come along and give us such pleasure in lent a helping hand. It's so good to see them happy and making jokes. I hope that we can go again next time. :D...

YouTube announced in November that they would be testing out encoding videos at higher resolutions (and with higher-quality audio encoding). Now it appears that a small sampling of uploaded videos can already be seen at their higher resolutions, simply by adding a little tag to the end of the video's URL. To get a noticeable bump in resolution on some clips, add &fmt=6 to the end of the address line. The trick, according to YouTube watchers, seems to work primarily with newer videos, and bumps the resolution from 320x240 to 448x336. Add &fmt=18 to the end of the URL, and you might get an MP4-encoded version, with better audio and a 480x360 resolution. Update: Now the Better YouTube Firefox extension includes this feature.

7am-1pm : Last day of school is kinda ennuyeux. No activities and I received my end-of-year result slip which is damn badddd! menurun gila kali ni..-.-..

and my friends and I helped teachers a lot! ( tak le bla..=p )

2pm-4pm : The party was made at McDonald..There we did much enjoy with our five teachers, Pn. Rozila ( My class teacher ) , Pn. Norsham , Pn. Nurul Hakimah , Pn. Siti Aminah and Pn. Noor Rizam and almost all of our classmates. The most funny things occured here. Students are acting like our teachers, some showing funny news presentation, playing guitar that is ME! etc. What can I say..I'm a good entertainer..=p..(joke)
